Dr. Annalee Coakley

MD
CLINICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
FAMILY MEDICINE AND REFUGEE HEALTH PHYSICIAN

Dr. Annalee Coakley is a family physician and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, where she also serves as Director of Community Engaged Learning. She is co-director of the Migration Humanitarian Health Collective (MH2C), and Director of Strategic Partnerships and Global Engagement for the Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers.

Over the past fifteen years, Dr. Coakley has emerged as one of Canada's leading voices in refugee and migrant health. As Medical Director of Calgary's Mosaic Refugee Health Clinic from 2012 to 2024, she transformed the clinic into one of Canada's most recognized refugee primary care programs, expanding clinical capacity and improving access to comprehensive care for thousands of newly arrived refugees.

Her work spans clinical care, health system innovation, research, education, and policy advocacy. Together with her colleagues, she successfully advocated for changes to federal family reunification policies affecting Yazidi refugees, co-created two intersectoral organizations supporting the mental health and resettlement of Yazidi survivors of genocide, and helped lead Calgary's COVID-19 outbreak response and vaccination clinics at meat-processing plants.

Dr. Coakley's scholarship focuses on migrant and refugee health systems, health equity, forced displacement, and community-engaged approaches to healthcare delivery. She has chaired the North American Refugee Health Conference and currently co-chairs the International Refugee and Migration Health Conference. Through her leadership of national and international partnerships, she works to advance evidence-informed policy and strengthen migrant-sensitive health systems in Canada and globally.

Her contributions have been recognized through numerous honours, including the College of Family Physicians of Canada's Jean-Pierre Despins Award (2024) and the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
